Hummingbirds in flight

On the Texas gulf coast we have some varieties of hummingbirds that stay year round.

If you spend a few minutes outdoors you will hear plenty of them and see them. If you are lucky you have your camera and the correct settings and the right lens on at the time you can grab a few pictures.

I try to keep at least two feeders out even thought just about everything in our yard blooms. The feeders allow me the chance to get the pictures I want.

This young hummer in the last picture thought the flower on the feeder was real.

Hummingbirds are some of natures tiny wonders little birds that fly so fast you barely see them but their beauty is outstanding.

The Beauty of Hummingbirds

We have quite a few hummingbirds around here.

I think they like our yard because there is always numerous different plants blooming all the time.

We have 3 feeders out under the oak trees in the backyard.

When you see several chasing each other that is usually because the different species that are fighting. We have atleast 3 species here. They do not like to be at the feeders at the same time.

Here are a few pictures of the ruby throated hummingbird.

I was able to capture these images over the weekend. I had on my 400mm lens and they were about 10 – 12 ft away.

I make my own hummingbird nectar using this recipe.

1 Part White Granulated Sugar

4 Parts Water

Red food coloring is okay if you use only a few drops if the feeders have some red on them they will find them.

Stir until disolved thouroughly.

If you live in the warmer climate areas it is a good idea to change the nectar often because it sours from the heat. Always place your feeders in the shade.

The hummingbirds are so small but their beauty brings such joy to the world.

The aroma of the jasmine

We have had our star jasmine on our lattice fence off the side deck for many years.

I think its prettier this year than it has ever been. The smell is so strong you just want to stay there sniffing it lol.

We have to cut it back after it blooms this year or we will not be able to get through the gate anymore.

I have noticed this year there are lots of hummingbirds enjoying our jasmine.

The Hummingbirds are back

I have been seeing a few hummingbirds over the last week or so. I put out my feeders even though we have a lot of things blooming right now.

Today I saw a lot of them and they were in the jasmine. There must be 30 – 40 flying in and out of the jasmine. I love the sound of the flying by, the noises they make and watching them get into little spats with each other.

For all these pictures I used my 400mm lens. I spent over an hour watching the hummers and taking their pictures. These are the five pictures I liked the best.

Hummers are fast, they are quite beautiful and most of all they are tiny and a challenge to photograph.

Enjoying nature is part of my life I am inspired by the beauty and simplicity and grateful it is there for me to enjoy.

The little things in life

Hummingbirds are such beautiful tiny birds.

I see them by the feeders we have out but sometimes in the flowers in the yard.

When they zip by you when you’re outside it’s a  quick buzz that happens so fast you can miss it.

Here is the recipe I use for hummingbird nectar.

1 – cup of sugar

4 – cups of water

Bring to a boil take off the fire let cool and then add to feeders. Change out the nectar every couple of weeks especially when it is hot.

There have been years I can not put out enough nectar but this year there seems to be more wasted than what is eaten. I contribute part of that to the hummingbird friendly plants that bloom we have in our yard.

Hummingbirds make you realize it is the little things in life that truly matter.
