The mulberry thieves

We get excited about the mulberry season.

The grandkids love to pick and eat them I love to make jelly with them.

The mulberry thieves are back this year and every time we get some dark ones they swoop in and eat them all. These are cedar waxwings they are quite unique looking.

Even Daisy hunted the ground for some and could only find red ones and she wanted the black ones she loves to eat them so does Zoee.

Last year we got lucky and they left our tree alone this year they are making up for it.

You never know what the wildlife will do from year to year. I do think these birds are quite pretty.

We have about 10 baby mulberry trees growing we are going to dig up and put in pots for Livingston. They are about 4 ft tall.

The mulberry bandits

Once you hear the song of the cedar waxwing you know they are back.

They are here for one reason and one reason only that is to eat the mulberries right off the tree. They fly in groups of 20 – 30 and go to town all the while wearing their mask and filling up on berries.

We have 4 of the purple mulberry trees and one white tree but the purple are so much better. The largest purple tree is our biggest producer and I was hoping to make some jelly this year.

I think they are beautiful birds and I love to hear them but we really enjoyed picking the mulberries last year with the grandkids. They would run for the trees the minute they drove up so they could eat some berries.

Purple stained hands and lips and lots of giggles to go around. These are the moments that make life so precious.

They’re Back

Last year we got lucky and the cedar waxwings found other mulberry trees so we actually got to pick some.

This year they are eating our mulberries before we can pick them.

There will be 60 in the tree at the same time chowing down.

Daisy was mad because she loves mulberries and she went out there and was looking all over the ground to find some. I finally found a few on the ground for her. Yes, our dog picks berries lol.

Nature is so beautiful and these birds colors are truly amazing. I enjoy watching them even if they are thieves.

Mulberry thieves

The cedar waxwings are back and they are stealing our mulberries right off the trees.

They have a mask on like a bandit in disguise they are thieves I tell you.

Their diet is 70% fruit so this is why they are happy to see our mulberry trees.

This is the second year in a row that they have come in large groups and eat all day long for a few weeks until they strip the mulberry trees dry of all the fruit. We do not mind sharing the mulberries with the birds we just wish they would not eat them all.

Daisy is mad because she likes to eat the ones off the ground and as you can see they are eating those too.

They are some sleek looking birds that is for sure.
