Today would have been my Dads 78th. birthday.
My dad was my hero and that will never change.
Memories are something we will always have but my grief is still there. It has been four years since cancer took my dads life.
Happy Birthday Dad I love you!
Four years ago today my dad passed away.
There is not a day goes by that I do not think about him and miss him.
I am grateful that I had him in my life as long as I did. At the same time, I am also glad he does know what I have been through over the last year.
Thank you, Dad, for all the life lessons you taught me because that made me the strong person I am today.
I love you Dad and you are forever in my memories and in my heart!
This is for anyone who is currently smoking or has ever smoked this could also be used for those who were around secondhand smoke.
I quit smoking 10 – years ago but smoked for many many years.
There are many new studies showing that a low dose CT scan can find early lung cancer as small as a grain of rice.
I had my LDCT done on Monday and I see a pulmonologist next week to explain the results to me. It was literally a 5-minute test and no tunnels that is a big plus. Our insurance paid for it at 100% so there was no out of pocket.
This American Cancer Society recommends yearly screening for lung cancer for people who are 55 – 74 years old. If you are a current smoker or a smoker who has quit in the last 15 years. If you have a 30 pack a year smoking history.
Tell your Dr. you are interested in doing an LDCT scan. It could increase the quality of your life or possibly find early cancer.
Have you ever been surprised by a strangers kindness when they have done a good deed?
This week several days apart I was blessed with this happening to me two times.
Many years ago we had turned in photo albums with pictures to an attorney that represented our son in a child custody case. Our son and his wife turned in another album. We honestly both forgot about getting back the albums and like I said years have passed by.
Somehow the albums ended up in a dumpster nearby where this man named Frank worked. Frank a former photographer himself knew the value of family photos and he picked up the albums. My business card just happened to be inside the album I had turned in. The only problem was it had our home phone number on it we no longer have. That is when he searched the internet for a new number and called me. Today I picked up those two photo albums that would have been lost forever had it not been for Frank. Thank you so much, Frank, for taking the time to do this good deed.
Today I had gone to a smaller grocery store chain to pick up some pickling spices for our daughter. Her cucumbers are making so many that her kids are eating them for snacks, she’s giving them away and she decided to make some pickles. While standing in line at the checkout this older gentlemen probably in his 80s told the checker he wanted to pay for my stuff with his. I said, “Sir you honestly do not have to do that but thank you so much for offering.” He said no I want to. I said, “so today you’re doing a good deed he said that is exactly it.” I told him “Thank you very much and to have a great day.”
There are still good people in this world who do good things out of the kindness of their heart and expect nothing in return. Complete strangers who take the time to do something nice. I would like to thank you both for crossing my path this week.
Now it’s my turn to pay it forward two times.
Radiation has been flying right along week 4 and 5 are now completed.
I am still turning reddish purple but only one small crack in the skin so far. It is very irritating and starting to get itchy. I am not sure what is worse under my arm or my neck both are in the creases of the skin.
I have 9 treatments left only one full radiation and the other 8 are targeted at where the tumor was at. They told me the burn areas will start healing while this is going on.
My bone scan results were a bit odd and I have not gotten to talk to my oncologist yet.
I had one 10 years ago and had a decrease of 13.4% of the Axial Lumbar. The left femoral neck had an increase of 7.8%. Now how did that happen?
Impression stated: Osteopenia of the lumbar spine. The way I understand this it means the step before Osteoporosis but not bad enough to be diagnosed Osteoporosis.
Calcium and exercise should improve this and once my burns are healed I will get back on track with that. At this time sweat really irritates the burn areas.
I have been able to do a little photography but just have to limit the sun exposure.
I wanted to say a special thank you to my family and friends that have been there for me through this whole ordeal.
I am still fighting like a girl.
The second week of radiation went pretty good I was nowhere near as tired.
I had one painful day where it felt like a stabbing pain under my arm other than that all was good. I used an ice pack to help with this.
The third week has been good and I am a little more tired this week. I am trying to stay busy to keep my mind off of being less than halfway through with this.
Week 4 – 5 is when the burns generally start to happen next week will be my week 4.
Next week I have a bone scan for a baseline before I start the hormone blockers in 3 1/2 more weeks. I made sure to schedule it right after my radiation appointment you have to coordinate these things are you are back and forth all the time.
I ordered myself the prettiest necklace for breast cancer. My sister bought me a tee shirt that says “Rebel with a cause”.
She and I get together one time a week for shopping and we are truly enjoying ourselves. Sometimes we even go out to lunch and make a long day of it.
We might go to Resale stores, Tuesday Morning, Habitat Restore, Hotel Liquidators, Garage Sales or shop auctions online needless to say we have found some pretty cool stuff.
I won a beautiful dresser at an auction for $100.00 it was brand new 8 drawer white dresser it’s in my office to give me more storage. The retail of this dresser was $350.00.
My sister found me a plastic cow head I will be doing something with just not sure what way I want to go with it. Some people paint them wild colors, some use the silver or gold leafing on them, some glue fabric on them. Some people spray paint them there are just so many ways to go with this plastic cow head.
She also found me 3 of the wooden room service trays they are HUGE I used the liquid sander on them to remove the varnish and I have them primed. I know one for sure will be getting a liquid paint treatment I love the look of the paint and the cells. Of course, I had to buy the silicone and the Floetrol to do it with. Another craft to get into lol.
I am still fighting like a girl.
I was very lucky my oncologist ordered the Oncotype – DX testing on my breast cancer tumor.
This tested for over 20 genes and it lets them know some important stuff such as chemo would only decrease my chances of not getting cancer again in 5 years by 1%. That little detail let myself and the doctors decide it was not worth the side effects for 1%.
I am grateful for this new testing for breast cancer because without it I would have had to do chemo.
Today I had to pre- register at the hospital to get the chemo port taken out since it will not be needed. That will be done this week and its a 10 minute thing.
I then went to the radiologist/ oncologist appointment to get molded for the position I will be in each time I receive radiation so they are sure I am in the exact same position each time. While I was there they did a CAT scan that was an easy test since I can see out both ends. I can not do a MRI.
The Dr. will now configure up everything to pinpoint the exact locations for my chemo. They are targeting the breast and the lymph node chain.
They gave me some tiny little tatoo’s that felt like a tiny needle that helps with the locations.
Next week I should be starting radiation and this will go on for 5 weeks x 5 days a week I was able to reduce it by 1 1/2 weeks with my second surgery.
Life is good and I am so grateful to the wonderful people I have in my life. Your support has meant everything to me.
I am still fighting like a girl.
A week ago Friday none of us knew exactly what Harvey would do to Texas.
We knew what the news reporters were saying but half the time they are wrong. In your gut, you want to believe what they are saying but the week before we were supposed to get rain and never did.
Harvey left an imprint on Texas that will never be forgotten.
Harvey changed peoples lives forever.
Many lost their lives, their homes, their pets and all their belongings.
Horses and cattle drown as the flood waters rose and they could not be moved out quickly enough.
Peoples whose houses have never flooded were now flooded for the first time.
Driving down Wellborn street in Brookside Village in Texas everyone’s belongings are out on the street. Clear Creek backed up into many homes in this neighborhood. If I was guessing at a number I would say 300 homes are destroyed but it could be more.
Piles of sheetrock cut 4 ft up as per the instructions of insurance. Appliance after appliance sitting on the curb. Cars, trucks, and SUVs with so much moisture on the windows on the inside you know they were under water.
This was only one neighborhood of many but it was my sister & her families neighborhood.
The sheetrock has been torn down to the rafters. This home has very few floors left in it. Half of all their belongings, memories, and keepsakes are sitting on the curb.
These kinds of things take months to repair and get back like it was prior to this flood.
It will never be the same because now you feel vulnerable to mother nature.
Emotionally it takes a toll on you, your life and most of all your spirit.
Long days of working, little sleep and exhaustion start to set in and everyone just can not think anymore.
What room do you start putting back together first?
It is so overwhelming to see and I saw it yesterday with my own eyes for the first time since the storm.
There were so many areas of Texas affected by Harvey, so many neighborhoods destroyed, lives taken and peoples spirit broken.
The road to recovery will be long but in the end, everyone will be stronger.
Everyone will get their spirits back again, be able to take a deep breath and get back to their normal lives it will just take time.
