Cricket turned 3 years old

Cricket turned 3 years old on February 2.

I never did get her picture posted because I had just gotten out of the hospital on visit 1 and little did I know there would be another visit a few weeks later.

Cricket had to go on a diet. Her body was resembling a square instead of a curve in the hip area. She was eating 5 cups a day now she is getting 4 cups and as you can notice she has a dip in her side which is perfect. Cricket’s body is built deep from the top of her back to the bottom of her stomach. When you roll her over she is so wide.

I hate when I have to cut her back because she is a very big dog but at the same time, big dogs can not function if they are overweight. She can still run right at you like a bulldozer about to knock you down.

I can not believe she is already 3 years old. The next time she goes into heat she will be getting bred again. I think we figured up this should be around May.

Crickets pups 13 days old

Today Crickets pups are 13 days old.

You might be noticing there are only 8 pups. A few days ago we lost two puppies.

Cricket was laying on top of them when she was sleeping and did not realize it and they were crushed. Little puppies can root right under a mama dog. Jeanelle went to check on everyone and found her and when she stood up she noticed the two pups were crushed. Jeanelle and I both cried over this. Things like this happen and it is just very sad.

The remaining 8 are all doing well tails were docked last week and Cricket got a check-up she is back to her normal weight of 153 #s. The pups are gaining weight fast which is really good.

Their eyes are starting to open and they are trying to walk.

More updates as time goes on.

Two-day old Pups with Mom

Here are Cricket and her 10 pups at two days old.

We ended up taking them to our daughter’s house in Livingston yesterday.

She’s much better at this puppy thing than I am and knows what to watch out for.

Last night she brought 3 in the house because they looked dehydrated she fed them several times in the night and once this morning they are doing great and will go back with mom. This is just for supplemental feeding the bigger pups will always push the little ones out of the way so you have to help them out.

Cricket’s biggest pups were two males they weighed in at 20.4 oz the smallest was a female at 13.9 oz.

Crickets pups

Cricket had about 20 hours of labor.

Jeanelle came in from Livingston to help me she knew I would be panicking and trust me I was.

There was a lot of panting, heavy breathing, teeth chattering and shaking. First labors are never easy and a big litter can be tough on the mom.

She started having pups around 10:30 a.m. yesterday morning and did not finish until about 12:00 p.m.

The first 4 pups came in 2 hours then she started stretching out the time between them from her exhaustion of the long labor.

She even had some good snoring naps and delivered pups while sleeping.

We ended up with 14 puppies, 3 were stillborn and the 4th faded on the first day. We have 10 healthy puppies right now. I am hoping there are no new pups that popped up in the night.

We were grabbing pups and making sure the sack comes off quickly so they can breathe and then making sure she cleans them then drying and rubbing them to get them going it was quite exhausting. After all that you have to make sure they start sucking. It is quite overwhelming.

The picture I am sharing Jeanelle got with her cell phone I will try and get some pics today of everyone.

She would have a girl then a boy and kept alternating this part was too funny. There are a mixture of Formantinos like dad and Brindle like Cricket. Today I will get an accurate count since we need to do weights anyway then collar them with soft color collars.

This Formantino male pup was determined to snuggle at one point under her ear Jeanelle got a picture of that too.

There are new puppies at our house and Crickets pups can make some noise!

Cricket swallowed a watermelon

Cricket has decided to blossom and I do mean twice the size of the last pictures.

Everything is ready to go including the nanny cam.

She is carrying the pups deep from her back to her belly. That is one big belly.

We have had a lot of heavy breathing going on the last week they are running out of room. Jeanelle thinks there is 12 plus puppies. I HOPE NOT!

She is MUCH bigger than the pictures show I can not seem to get a good angle to show her true size.

Cricket turns 2

Cricket is 2 years old today and a very healthy Cane Corso also known as an Italian Mastiff.

She should be having puppies at the end of February.

This is her first litter and since we did not do an ultrasound we have no idea if there are 2 or 12 puppies.

There is a waiting list for her puppies and two people have already put down deposits and a third one will soon.

We have upped her food once and will be upping it again this week so we have healthy plump puppies. I even switched her food to Victor Professional I just put everyone on the same food.

Jack has been busy building her a mansion shed that will include a concrete floor two windows and a door. There will of course be a heat lamp for the puppies. He even fixed the floor so it drains to one corner and I can wash it out once the puppies are here to keep everything nice and clean.

I have to pick up some cheap blankets for the delivery and order some welping pads to keep the pups comfy.

Do not let her size fool you she has been very needy lately so I think she knows what’s going on.

There will be pics when the puppies arrive. Just look at that face!

Raven’s puppies

Raven our daughters Cane Corso had 12 puppies and all of them survived.

These puppies will be 8 weeks old this week and registered puppies have to be 8 weeks to go to new homes.

Raven did a wonderful job taking care of this large group of puppies none had to be bottled fed.

I think there are 3 females left but the rest are already sold. A lot of people had made deposits 6 months ago on Ravens litter.

Top-quality dogs with good genetics and a reliable breeder make a huge difference in the way a puppy looks and acts.

There are some that look like Mama and some look like Daddy.

They are all so adorable. I can not share 12 pics it would take too long to load but here are a few of my favorite pictures.

Puppy love and kisses are hard to resist.

Cricket 21- months old

Cricket is our 21-month-old Cane Corso she is a Brindle that is very tall has huge feet and weighs in around 150#’s.

She is eating 4 to 4 1/2 cups a day of a high protein food. The one we buy is 26% protein and 20% fat. I had to cut back on her food because she was getting fat right now she actually looks really good.

Cricket is the biggest female to be born at Shady Acres so far. I believe the biggest male is around 170#s.

There are people on the waiting list for a puppy out of her and she should be going into heat within the next month. This will be her first breeding and hopefully it will not be a huge litter.

She loves to run in the backyard and drink out of the birdbaths because they are just her height. Going on a walk and investigating the area outside of our yard is one of her favorite things to do.

When it is bedtime she gets 1 hour in the house and she drinks about 1 gallon of water gets her treats and in the kennel she goes for the night.

She loves attention and is great with the grandkids but when she starts running full speed towards you that is when you think you are going to be run over by a freight train. She will run straight at you and miss you by 1 – 2 inches this is part of her silly personality. There is nothing funnier than a 150# silly dog.

Never let the size of a dog intimidate you just because a dog is big does not mean they are mean.

Cricket is 10 months old

Cricket is 10 months old and still growing.

I have not had a chance to get her weighed people seem intimidated by her so I ordered a $50.00 muzzle so I can take her to PetSmart and weigh her. This should make people feel safer but honestly, she is on alert at home but does not seem bothered in public. My guess is somewhere between 130#s and 140#s she is eating about 7 cups dry plus a few tablespoons of canned.

The first pic is her sitting for her treat, the second pic Jack was showing her size by having her walking next to him. In the third pic after being let out of the pen she was headed straight for me talk about intimidation. The last pic is showing off her big head.

I love photographing pets and trying to capture their personality.

Cricket is 6 months old

Cricket our Cane Corso pup turned 6 months old on August 2nd.

She is starting obedience training on August 10th. This lady will come to our home 2 x per week and work on all her commands and teach her to act like a well-behaved lady.

She is very smart and seems to pick up stuff really fast so I really think this training should work out well for her.

She starts training indoors, then we move to the yard where there are some distractions. As the weeks go on we will move to the park where there are lots of people & distractions. A dog has to be able to focus on commands in all situations.

I feel like she’s probably a 100#s now she grows really fast.

I ordered her an XL kennel and she can stand up in it and sprawl out so this one should be the perfect size for her to sleep in at night. Her collars are 23″ I just bought two new ones for her.

The plastic kiddie pools are not lasting so I think its time we get a galvanized stock tank. I found one that is 2 ft wide x 4 ft long x 1 ft deep for $90.00. Sometimes I catch her in the pool sitting up cooling off and asleep lol.

I will post an update on Cricket’s training during the next month.
