Cricket 21- months old

Cricket is our 21-month-old Cane Corso she is a Brindle that is very tall has huge feet and weighs in around 150#’s.

She is eating 4 to 4 1/2 cups a day of a high protein food. The one we buy is 26% protein and 20% fat. I had to cut back on her food because she was getting fat right now she actually looks really good.

Cricket is the biggest female to be born at Shady Acres so far. I believe the biggest male is around 170#s.

There are people on the waiting list for a puppy out of her and she should be going into heat within the next month. This will be her first breeding and hopefully it will not be a huge litter.

She loves to run in the backyard and drink out of the birdbaths because they are just her height. Going on a walk and investigating the area outside of our yard is one of her favorite things to do.

When it is bedtime she gets 1 hour in the house and she drinks about 1 gallon of water gets her treats and in the kennel she goes for the night.

She loves attention and is great with the grandkids but when she starts running full speed towards you that is when you think you are going to be run over by a freight train. She will run straight at you and miss you by 1 – 2 inches this is part of her silly personality. There is nothing funnier than a 150# silly dog.

Never let the size of a dog intimidate you just because a dog is big does not mean they are mean.

Feathered grass

I have no idea what this weed is but it comes up in pastures that have not been mowed very often.

It looks like feathers in the wind and the stalks might be bunched together like this but the next bunch could be 10 feet away.

All I know is it photographs beautifully in different light of the day.

The feathered grass will always remain a mystery.

Time to dig sweet potatoes

It is about that time of year time to start digging up the sweet potatoes.

It is a lot of work I let Jack dig and I wash them off.

He did one of the smaller beds and dug up about 3 gallons.

What we have found out is they grow better in the raised beds because we can get the dirt like we want it and keep the rabbits from eating the tops off.

They do make some pretty blooms but the plants spread everywhere. Next year we will make new raised beds further away from everything else.

Growing things in a garden is very satisfying and the reward is your bounty of vegetables.

Daisy girl

I found this picture from last year of Daisy and the way her head was tilted was so cute.

I decided I needed to post it so Daisy could say HELLO.

She is a talker you talk to her she talks back I have no idea what she is saying but she does talk.

Dogs bring lots of smiles to your life and joy to your heart.

COVID 19 booster shot

We received our Pfizer COVID 19 shots in February and March of this year.

At first they said after 8 months later to get the booster but that changed. Now it is over 7 months later and we are getting our COVID Booster shots today.

Normally I am getting my flu vaccine in October but my primary care Dr. says to spread out all vaccines 1 month apart. I received a new tetanus shot in September, COVID booster will be October, Flu shot will be November and shingles vaccine will be in December.

We are still wearing mask when we are out in public which is not very often and we always have hand sanitizer in our trucks to use when needed.

Be safe and lets all do what we can do to get over this mess.

Hummingbirds in flight

On the Texas gulf coast we have some varieties of hummingbirds that stay year round.

If you spend a few minutes outdoors you will hear plenty of them and see them. If you are lucky you have your camera and the correct settings and the right lens on at the time you can grab a few pictures.

I try to keep at least two feeders out even thought just about everything in our yard blooms. The feeders allow me the chance to get the pictures I want.

This young hummer in the last picture thought the flower on the feeder was real.

Hummingbirds are some of natures tiny wonders little birds that fly so fast you barely see them but their beauty is outstanding.

Golden Dew Drop

Duranta erecta is a flowering shrub in the verbena family

It’s nick name is golden dew drop. The flowers are a deep sapphire color and truly outstanding looking.

My plant froze back and I thought it was dead with the winter freeze in February but low and behold it came back and now it is about five feet tall and 4 feet wide.

Capturing the beauty of such a tiny flower on camera is priceless.

Mockingbird

I seem to be seeing a lot more mockingbirds this year which so happen to be the Texas state bird.

They can copy what you whistle to them back at you I guess that is why they are called mockingbirds.

Birds whistle and sing songs for all the world to hear but those that can hear them are truly inspired by nature.
