This is the Port Bolivar Lighthouse it was built in 1872 and decommissioned in 1933. It is the only lighthouse near us that I know of that is still standing.

The salt air has rusted it but it stands tall for all to see.

During 1900 when a hurricane hit Galveston 100 people stayed in this lighthouse.

The death toll from that hurricane was somewhere between 6,000 and 12,000. The storm was a category 4 but back then there were not the warnings that are available today.

Since then we have come along way warning people of danger ahead of time so they can leave the low lying coastal communities.
